S05 Bricks & Tiles

The brick & tile industry is also known as the heavy clay industry (Heavy Clays) or rough pottery industry in foreign countries, and it is also classified as the building ceramic industry in China. Its product varieties include clay extruded bricks, split bricks, paving bricks, roof tiles, pottery plates, pottery tubes, cubic pottery, mosaics, glazed bricks, etc. The firing temperature is not high, generally at 1050-1200°C, and the kiln used is related to the fired products. Large & wide tunnel kiln is usually used for the firing of clay extruded bricks, split bricks, paving bricks, roof tiles, and pottery tubes. Shuttle kilns are usually used for the firing of pottery plates, pottery tubes, and cubic pottery. And roller kilns are usually used for the firing of pottery plates, mosaics, and glazed tiles. The firing atmosphere is mainly oxidizing atmosphere, and reducing atmosphere is used in certain stages of the firing process for certain products. Firing cycles vary in length, it is as long as 24-72 hours for tunnel kilns, while it is only 2-8 hours for roller kilns. The types of kiln fuel mainly include natural gas, city gas, producer gas, heavy oil, diesel, liquefied petroleum gas, etc.

Although the firing temperature of the kilns for tile & brick (and building ceramics) is low, the kiln cars and kiln furniture bear heavy load, requiring the kiln furniture system used to have high compressive resistance, flexural strength and good thermal shock stability. Raw materials for bricks & tiles are generally obtained locally. In some places, the raw materials contain high alkali content, alkali vapor is highly corrosive to kiln furniture and kiln body during firing. Special attention should be paid on the selection of materials for kiln furniture and kiln body.
