S11 Abrasive Tools

Abrasives refer to tools used for grinding or polishing in machining. Common abrasive tools are grinding wheels, grinding blocks, sandpaper, etc. Abrasives are made by bonding abrasives with high hardness (usually silicon carbide abrasives and corundum abrasives) together with the bonding agent. According to the type of binder used, abrasive tools can be divided into three categories, inorganic bond (ceramic bond) abrasive tools, organic bond abrasive tools and metal bond abrasive tools, among which ceramic abrasive tools (that is ceramic bond) are the mostly used tools. The production process of ceramic abrasive tools is simple - abrasives with certain particle size distribution are mixed with additives such as binders and colorants, and then pressed into various shapes, dried and fired at certain temperature to obtain abrasive tools. The binder used in ceramic abrasive tools is usually multi-ingredient system based on clay-feldspar materials, and the firing temperature is between 1250-1320 ° C. The firing kilns are usually tunnel kiln, shuttle kiln and bell/beehive kiln. Roller kiln is used for firing of abrasive tools in small sizes. The firing time is closely related to the size of the fired abrasives, generally up to 45-140 hours. The fuel used in modern kilns for abrasive firing is usually clean fuel, such as natural gas, producer gas, coke oven gas, etc., and the firing atmosphere is generally oxidizing atmosphere.

The kiln furniture used for abrasive firing bears heavy load and stays long time within the kiln, so it requires good high-temperature load softening point and excellent high-temperature creep resistance. The advantages of cordierite-mullite kiln furniture for the firing of abrasive tools are low cost, no contaminations to abrasive tools, and long life. However, if the kiln furniture structure is poor or improper materials are used, it is then easy to deform. The cordierite-mullite materials such as RON and DOA produced by Trend have been used in the grinding wheel industry at home and abroad for many years. They can be used not only in the single-deck kiln furniture system for roller kiln, but also in the multi-deck system for tunnel kiln and shuttle kiln.
